Q: In the late winter & early spring, what are all the green weeds & how do I control them? A: Those are cool season grasses that can be controlled organically w/ Corn Gluten Meal, a natural pre-emergent.
Q: My St Augustine grass is thinning out & I can pull it up. Do I have Grub Worms? A: Probably not. What is more likely is the grass has been under stress due to too much or not enough water.
Q: My grass is not covering over & is not deep green. What am I doing wrong? A: Lack of proper organic fertilization & lack of regular, deep-root watering can cause this. Lawns need to be fertilized in early spring, early summer & in the fall. During the growing season, a twice weekly watering of 30 - 45min at least is necessary to form healthy, deep roots.
Q: Should I bag my grass clippings? A: No! Grass clippings should always be left on the lawn to decompose & send nutrients back into the soil.
Q: What are the benefits of organic fertilization? A: Organic fertilizers not only feed the plant, but they also feed the soil, which is a living entity that needs to be fed as well. When the soil is healthy, billions of microscopic organisms are living & dying, feeding other organisms, which feed larger organisms, which attract earthworms, which aerate & feed the soil.
Q: So, what's wrong with chemical fertilizers? A: Harsh chemical fertilizers are a chemical, not a natural product. Therefore, plants get "hooked" on these chemicals & don't get their nutrition from the soil. After years of chemical applications, soils can become practically sterile without any nutritional value to plants. Also, the runoff of these chemicals into our creeks, streams & rivers cause serious water pollution. |
